The Honest Kitchen

The Honest Kitchen (Pet Food) is a line of holistic dehydrated, human-grade pet food. The company's foods are all-natural and made from whole food ingredients, without the use of chemicals, by-products or fillers. Dehydration gently removes the moisture from each ingredient through evaporation. This slow process is much gentler than cooking, canning or extruding and helps protect the nutrition that mother nature put in each ingredient.
Founded by Lucy and Charlie Postins in 2002, the company was started in a San Diego beach cottage, and is now headquartered in the old Wonderbread Factory in San Diego's East Village. The Honest Kitchen's food is produced in a human-grade facility that makes cereals and other foods for human consumption. This fact, along with the company's ingredients, which are sourced directly form the human food chain, resulted in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) providing a formal statement of no objection to The Honest Kitchen, permitting the company to use the term “Human Grade” on its product labels.

In 2007, The Honest Kitchen prevailed in a lawsuit against Ohio Department of Agriculture based on its right to truthful, commercial free speech on its product labeling. The Department of Agriculture had denied the company a product registration in the state, claiming that the use of the term 'human grade' on labeling could prove confusing to residents of the state. A court ruled in the company's favor and Ohio was required to provide The Honest Kitchen with a feed license.〔/〕
The Honest Kitchen upgraded its system of Vendor Pledges in 2011, to cement its requirements of raw ingredient suppliers. The company requires that all ingredients come with a signed pledge that they are free of GMO material, do not originate from China, have not been irradiated and have been screened in accordance with human food standards, among other things.〔/〕
The Honest Kitchen's foods are produced without high heat, pressure or irradiation. Fresh produce are dehydrated below 104 °F and are considered raw. Meat and fish are gently steamed at 140 °F to 165 °F to kill food-borne pathogens and then dehydrated at 125 °F. Grains and potatoes are flash heated at temperatures above 210 °F to help break down cellulose and increase digestibility.
The Honest Kitchen's foods are required to be re-hydrated with warm water before serving. The process takes three minutes and does not require overnight re-hydration or cooking. The company has eleven dog food recipes, two cat recipes, a line of gourmet hand-baked dog cookies and two dehydrated pure fish treats (Beams & Wishes). The company also produces two supplements for pets (Perfect Form promotes normal, healthy functioning of the digestive tract, and Pro Bloom, a shelf-stable goats milk, contains probiotics and digestive enzymes). 'Perfect Form' has gained a cult following in the US and Canada as a results-oriented digestive supplement for intestinal upset.
The process of dehydration removes only the moisture from its ingredients. Because its foods are never cooked, canned or extruded, much more of the natural nutrition is maintained keeping them packed with vitamins, minerals and valuable phytonutrients – as well as natural color and flavor. Some dehydrated foods are even raw. This process helps to preserves the food’s nutrients so that less artificial supplements have to be added back to the food to ensure it is nutritious. Dehydration also stops spoilage. Most dehydrated foods are designed to be rehydrated simply by adding water at feeding time. 〔(Dog Food Reviews ) Top rated dog food reviews〕
In September 2009, The Honest Kitchen switched to sustainably farmed, free-range chicken. The company also uses cage-free turkey, mid-western beef and 100% wild-caught fish. The Honest Kitchen does not use any food ingredients from China.
